Sheep in the Big City is an Amercian animated comedy series made by Mo Willems for Cartoon Network, and animated by Curious Pictures.

The 9th Cartoon Cartoon, the series' pilot first premiered as part of Cartoon Network's "Cartoon Cartoon Summer" on August 18, 2000, before the series' debut on November 17, 2000.[1] [2]

Both seasons had 13 episodes each, totaling 26 episodes.

The first season premiered on November 17, 2000 with the first episode, Be Still My Bleating Heart, and finished airing on July 29, 2001 with To Sheep, Perchance to Dream.[3]

The series was to be cancelled due to poor viewership, but was given a second season at the last minute.[4]

The second season premiered on December 2, 2001 with Wish You Were Shear and the season, and thus the series, concluded on April 7, 2002 with the series finale, Baa-hind the Scenes.[5] [6]

Because of even worse ratings, the series was cancelled, but continued to have reruns on Cartoon Network until April 6, 2003.[7]

A third season was planned to air in 2003, but was cancelled.[8]

Plot[]

There is an anthropomorphic sheep named Sheep living his life in the Big City, hence the show's name, and having to deal with grips that come with living in such a place: From being chased by the Secret Military Organization for a sheep-powered ray-gun (that Sheep can only fit in), trying to romance Swanky, avoiding being seen by Lady Richington (who hates sheep and bashes them with a stainless steel wig) and Lisa Rental (who thinks he is a dog and wants to keep him as a pet), to all sorts of ridiculousness.

Style[]

The show heavily focuses on its literal humor, using several phrases and expressions as jokes and even plot points at times as a actual interpretation of said phrases and expression. The show also has several running gags, one of them includes The Angry Scientist getting angry after being called “mad” by anyone (mostly General Specific).

Availability[]

From 2006 to 2007, the entirety of Season 1 was available for purchase on iTunes, but has been removed for unknown reasons.

In 2011, a DVD containing the pilot and two episodes from the first season was released exclusively in the United Kingdom.

In 2022, most of the series became available for streaming on HBO Max in Latin America with both English and Spanish dubs available (the four episodes absent being "To Bleat or Not to Bleat", "Belle of the Baaaah", "15 Muttons of Fame", and "Baa-hind the Scenes").

The next year, the series was then made available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.[9]
